Dr. Jill McCluskey Named to NAS Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources

AAEA Past President to help oversee emerging issues in science-related policy

Today the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced AAEA Past President Dr. Jill McCluskey has been named to the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The Board is not only a major program for NAS, but members are responsible for overseeing studies on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and the use of natural resources.

“Public investment in scientific research is imperative,” McCluskey says. “Input from a diverse group of experts on the Board can identify frontiers of science and emerging issues that impact these investments.”

McCluskey, who served as AAEA President in 2015 and 2016, is a Distinguished Professor of Sustainability and Associate Director of the School of Economic Sciences at Washington State University. At WSU she has focused a great deal of time on areas such as industrial organization, a focus on consumer preferences, and environmental quality, all while working hard to stress the importance of opportunities for women in the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

“Scientific innovations allow us to thrive as a society,” McCluskey says, “in everything from energy resources to clean water and a healthy and abundant food supply.”

McCluskey will serve a three-year term on the Board, which is frequently looked to for guidance by members of Congress as well as many federal and state agencies.
