Alan R. Bird

On December 29, 2013, at home in Alexandria, of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Alan Bird, an economist, had six degrees, including a PhD in Economics from Michigan State University, and over 100 publications, including a book, "Surplus...The Riddle of American Agriculture." A past president of the Society of Government Economists, he worked at seven colleges and universities, including graduate faculty member at Michigan State University and University of Massachusetts. He was the top economist in the Office of Regional Planning, USDC, and was Deputy Director for USDA Economic Research Service. His government service spanned 32 years.

He also taught in Fairfax County schools, and was Adjunct Professor of Economics at NVCC for 35 years, winning Faculty of the Year 2006-2007. Born July 20, 1926, in Brisbane, Australia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics from University of Queensland, he emigrated to England, graduating from University of Nottingham with a Master of Science in Economics. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, he emigrated to the U.S., earned a PhD at MSU, and became a U.S. Citizen. Dr. Bird is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn, daughter Susan of Alexandria, son William of Charlottesville, son Robert of San Diego, CA, and four granddaughters. He was predeceased by son Richard. A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held on January 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 6362 Lincolnia Rd., Alexandria, VA.
