About 1,500 participants are expected to attend the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA at the Marriott Anaheim, July 31 - August 2, 2022 as well as attend virtually online. The Annual Meeting is made up of Invited Paper Sessions, Invited Case Study Papers, Organized Symposia, Selected Presentation Lightning Session, Selected Presentation, and Track Sessions.
Invited Paper Sessions are selected by the AAEA President and two additional Board members based on proposals submitted by AAEA members. These sessions are chosen because they may appeal to a broad spectrum of meeting attendees, further the development and dissemination of systematic knowledge in the field of agricultural and applied economics, and/or generate meaningful conversation. Invited Paper sessions generally involve 2-3 paper presentations and ample opportunity for discussion. Invited papers may also be published in the proceedings issue of the Applied Economics Teaching Resources.
Invited Case Study Papers are selected by members of the Case Study Committee based on proposals submitted by AAEA members. Papers presented in this session demonstrate how the application of economics principles to decision making in the public and/or private sectors lead to better decisions. Papers presented in this session may be published in the proceedings issue of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.
Organized Symposia are selected by the AAEA President based on proposals submitted by AAEA members. They highlight work-in-progress and involve discussions of policy issues, research methods, emerging research results, teaching or outreach topics, and issues in professional organization. The format of a session may involve paper presentations, panel discussions, debates, roundtable meetings, or other formats.
Selected Presentation Lightning Sessions includes 8 Selected Paper Presentations. Each presenter will have 9-10 minutes to present and discuss their paper.
Selected Presentations refers collectively to Selected Papers and Selected Posters. Selected Paper Sessions include up to four paper presentations. Each paper presentation is given 20 minutes; 15 minutes to present and five minutes for discussion.
Track Sessions are a set of multiple sessions submitted by AAEA Sections, scheduled throughout the meeting and devoted to a common interest area or topic. Sessions can be organized by a single Section or by multiple Sections to cover a wider range of topics.
Food Inflation During the Pandemic: Dissecting Supply Chains and Scanner Data
Invited Paper on Food and Agricultural Marketing
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Pacific
Room: Platinum 5
This session aims to empirically dissect the sources and effects of ongoing food inflation. The first paper applies innovative techniques to decompose the various channels of inflation along the agri-food supply chain. The next paper employs scanner level data to unpack the sources of demand and supply disruption. The last paper uses scanner level information to develop measures for ‘stock-out’ rates and analyzes its relationship with price changes and sales patterns.
World Food Consequences of the War on Ukraine
Invited Paper on International Development: Trade, Markets, and Policy
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am Pacific
Room: Platinum 5
Ukraine recently accounted for about 10% of world wheat exports, 15% of world corn and world barley exports, and 50% of world sunflower oil exports. The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine stopped planting in multiple areas of Ukraine, destroyed some storage facilities, disrupted supply routes for inputs as well as products, and destroyed port facilities.
In this session Ukrainian experts document Ukraine’s agricultural situation and present their latest outlook. Together with world trade, market and world food security experts they report and discuss the impacts on trade and world market prices, global food security,
and policy.
Carbon Markets: Learning from Experience and Visioning for the Future
Organized Symposia on Environmental Economics and Policy
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am Pacific
Room: Marquis Northwest
Carbon markets have risen to high visibility as a win-win solution for agriculture for addressing climate change.
This symposium will bring together panelists with a range of expertise and experience, including carbon market managers, university and non-governmental research leaders, and industry representatives who will explore current experience with carbon market functioning and solutions and visions for their future.
The symposium is paired with a research paper track session organized by the Environmental Economics Section and Senior Section that focuses on the opportunities and challenges of carbon markets for agricultural producers and forestry operations.
[Risk and] Supply Chain Resilience: Lessons from the Pandemic
Track Session on Applied Risk Analysis
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Pacific
Room: Gold Key I
While the agricultural sector has been reasonably resilient in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question remains of whether the supply disruptions that did occur where greater than socially optimal. One can argue that producers at the firm level have less concern with taking actions to reduce the supply chain’s vulnerability to shocks than is optimal at the society level. However, while increasing the resilience of agricultural supply chains could reduce the potential for large swings in prices, it could also decrease production efficiency and raise mean prices. This session will start with a discussion of the conceptual framework then move to issues in transport, trade, developing countries, and the role of federal policy.
Economics of wildfire
Track Session on Australia/Asia
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 4:45 pm - 6:15 pm Pacific
Room: Elite 2
The United States and Australia have both seen increasing impacts from wildfire in recent years. In 2021, California faced its largest single wildfire in recorded history, while Australia’s wildfire season in 2019-2020 (known as the “Black Summer”) made news around the world for its widespread impacts. Fire policy makers and managers face a wealth of complex decision problems, including long-term stategic decisions about mitigating risk and short-term within-fire tactical decisions. Traditionally, fire agencies have made relatively little use of economics but there are a growing number of economists working on the issue and engaging with relevant agencies. In this track session we will present a variety of current research projects on wildfire management, policy, and impacts across both countries.
Issues and Challenges with the Beef Supply Chain
Track Session on Extension
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 4:45 pm - 6:15 pm Pacific
Room: Grand Ballroom H
The Agricultural & Food Policy Center (AFPC) at Texas A&M University recently released a book titled The U.S. Beef Supply Chain: Issues and Challenges. This book was the culmination of a study on cattle markets initiated at the request of the bi-partisan leadership of the House Agriculture Committee in the 116th Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since release of the book, the market has continued to evolve and additional policy proposals have been put on the table. The purpose of this session is to provide an overview and update on many of the topics covered in the book.
Heterogeneous Impacts of Rural Broadband and Broadband Programs
Track Session on Community and Regional Economics
Date: August 1, 2022
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Pacific
Room: Elite 2
Expanding access to reliable and affordable high-speed broadband is a high priority for policy makers. Yet evidence is limited on the impacts of broadband programs and broadband speeds on different populations and types of businesses. Two of the papers in this session estimate impacts of the largest broadband program implemented by USDA to date – the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP). One paper investigates impacts of BIP on households’ adoption of broadband and individuals’ use of telework, employment, and wages by race and ethnicity using BIP data and American Community Survey microdata. A second paper investigates impacts of BIP on growth and survival of minority-owned and women-owned businesses using BIP and National Establishment Time Series data. The third paper investigates impacts of broadband speeds on business growth and survival and the heterogeneity of impacts, also using business establishment-level data.
Current Opportunities and Future Prospects of Carbon Markets in Agriculture and the Environment
Track Session on Land, Water and Environmental Economics
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 2:45 pm - 4:15 pm Pacific
Room: Grand Ballroom J
Carbon storage in agricultural and natural systems is a topic of increasing interest with respect to strategies to mitigate the risks of global climate change. However, factors contributing to a well-functioning carbon market as well as the full potential of agricultural and natural systems to store carbon are not yet fully understood. This session will cover various aspects of carbon markets as they relate to agriculture and the environment. Topics covered will include demand- and supply-side challenges to the development of agricultural carbon markets, temporal considerations of carbon storage in natural systems as they relate to the social cost of carbon, and prediction of spatial distributions of agricultural lands suitable to carbon storage in the U.S.
International comparisons of food consumption changes and strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic
Track Session on International Food & Agricultural Marketing Policy
Date: August 2, 2022
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Pacific
Room: Elite 3
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a pervasive disruptor of nearly every aspect of life in every corner of the world. Policy responses can be better designed and more effectively targeted if the various impacts of the pandemic can be better documented and understood. This session is focused on food consumption impacts and comparison of these impacts across differing countries and varying types of consumers. The first presentation examines changes in grocery shopping trips and meal purchases in North America, Europe and Asia. The second presentation reports on household effects of COVID-19-related constraints on food-related behaviors in the meal provisioning chain using samples of consumers in various European countries. The third paper broadens the scope by studying COVID-19 in the context of other hardships faced by households and individuals as they attempt to cope with the ongoing shocks and reverberating impacts of the pandemic.
