Important Determinants of Food Insecurity
AEPP podcast featuring two AAEA members
Over the past 20 years, enormous strides have been made in applied econometrics with applications for many questions posed in our profession. There has been a burgeoning number of surveys that can be used to address issues of particular relevance to this podcast pertaining to food insecurity. Many of these data sets are limited insofar as they do not ask questions about important determinants of food insecurity that are often unobserved.
In a new podcast released by the Applied Economics Perspectives & Policy, Craig Gundersen the managing editor interviews two authors featured in Volume 41 issue 3. "Are You Estimating the Right Thing? An Editor Reflects," authored by John Gibson and “Criminal Incarceration, Statutory Bans on Food Assistance and Food Security in Extremely Vulnerable Households: Findings from a Partnership with the North Texas Food Bank" by Ian McDonough and Daniel Millimet answer questions from their studies.
Gibson says, “A frequent problem is authors ignoring complex sample designs, in surveys that may have weighting, stratification and especially clustering or multistage selection, and overstating the precision of their results”
McDonough states, “We're just trying to better understand what factors are contributing to what is arguably one of the largest public health concerns in the U.S. currently, and that's this issue of food insecurity.”
