Improving Market Efficiency and Reducing Food Waste
Four presentations discuss the drivers at the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted. This has sparked concerns about the economic, environmental, and social impacts of food waste. Consequently, many countries, including the U.S., have adopted aggressive food loss and waste reduction goals.
In a Track Session collaborated by the Institutional and Behavioral Economics Section (IBES) and the Food and Agricultural Marketing Policy Section (FAMPS) of the Agricultural & Applied Economics association, “Food Waste along the Supply Chain: Drivers and Market Implications” will take place at the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting. Four presentations will examine waste behaviors and offer implications for improving market efficiency and reducing food waste on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 10:00 am EDT.
Brenna Ellison from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the Organizer as well as a presenter in this session. “The U.S. has a goal to cut food loss and waste in half by 2030. This has resulted in many initiatives that target food loss and waste along the supply chain. In this session, we will look at the impacts of some of these initiatives, such as changing date labeling on food products or introducing secondary markets for surplus food” Ellison says.
Over 1,500 participants are expected to attend the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting, which will take place on August 5- August 7 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C.
