International Comparisons of Food Consumption Changes and Strategies during the COVID-19 Pandemic

AAEA annual meeting track session

In the 2022 AAEA Annual Meeting session “International comparisons of food consumption changes and strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic” authors discuss the COVID-19 pandemic has been a pervasive disruptor of nearly every aspect of life in every corner of the world. Policy responses can be better designed and more effectively targeted if the various impacts of the pandemic can be better documented and understood.

This session is focused on food consumption impacts and comparison of these impacts across differing countries and varying types of consumers. The first presentation examines changes in grocery shopping trips and meal purchases in North America, Europe and Asia. The second presentation reports on household effects of COVID-19-related constraints on food-related behaviors in the meal provisioning chain using samples of consumers in various European countries. The third paper broadens the scope by studying COVID-19 in the context of other hardships faced by households and individuals as they attempt to cope with the ongoing shocks and reverberating impacts of the pandemic.

  • Cross-country comparisons of FAH and FAFH consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic
