Brief Description of Topic:
In a novel attempt to enhance teaching in our profession, we propose starting a teaching academy initiative to provide consistent efforts across our discipline to offer dedicated teacher training and mentoring of teacher development for students and early career professionals. Planned as an annual event, the AAEA Teaching Academy presents value and timely training for graduate students, early career professionals, faculty, and others to learn about inclusive, innovative, effective, and evidence-based pedagogy, teaching methods, and learning tools that enhance classroom experience. By participating in the academy, individuals will also build mentoring and networking relationships among education programs in the agricultural and applied economics, and agribusiness management profession. A significant effort would be put forward in engaging diverse audiences from minority serving institutions, in order to elevate diversity, equity, and inclusion in our classrooms and our profession.
We are offering up to 20 travel grants for graduate student AAEA members and AAEA early career professional members to help participants attend the 2024 AAEA Annual Meeting and the academy Pre-conference Workshop, and the activities for the following academic year. The travel grant will help cover travel to the 2024 AAEA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, 2024 AAEA Annual Meeting Registration, and hotel costs up to $1000 per participant (*Required to stay at the Annual Meeting Hotel - New Orleans Marriott). All travel grant recipients will receive reimbursement for the costs of attending the workshop (receipts required). Brief Description:Increases in food price inflation and volatility in recent years have renewed focus on the determinants and impacts of food price changes, as well as on the importance of reliable food price forecasts. The USDA Food Price Outlook (FPO) tracks and forecasts food price changes and FPO forecasts inform USDA agencies, industry, academia, and the public and rank second in web trafï¬c among ERS data products. Even after recent reï¬nements, the current FPO approach to forecasting food prices could be further improved by incorporating market conditions such as energy costs, wages, labor availability, transportation congestion, and market concentration, which have recently been cited as drivers of record-breaking inflation rates. Macroeconomic conditions that potentially affect retail demand, including the money supply, exchange rates, and core inflation, have only been examined in a pre-pandemic context, and it is unclear whether these same mechanisms can explain current inflationary trends. To address these shortcomings and identify new research areas, the workshop will gather top experts from government, academia, and industry to identify stakeholders’ needs, underutilized information, and the best methods for evaluating and forecasting food prices.
