Brief Description: The COSBAE Historical Plantation Tour will include a tour of two sugar plantations in the New Orleans region: the Laura and Oak Alley plantations. The tour will provide historical context regarding slavery, Creole culture, and plantation operations pre and post emancipation.
Relevance to AAEA Members/Meeting Attendees: The United States is one of the world's largest sugarcane producers, and Louisiana is a top sugar producing state. Since 1980, Louisiana's raw sugar production has increased more than threefold to about 1.7 million short tons. The tour will provide attendees with historical background on the role of slave labor and plantations in the development of Louisiana's sugarcane industry.
