Brief Description: In 2021, the AAEA Employment Services Committee held a pre-conference workshop at the AAEA's annual meeting, focusing on bridging academic economics with the employment realities in the private and public sectors. The workshop covered topics like private sector hiring, the hiring process, resume building, and employer expectations, aiming to prepare students and faculty for the job market. This initiative also enabled potential job candidates to network and engage in discussions with company representatives. Building on this, this proposal aims to expand the program to include institutional employers such as the World Bank, IMF, IFPRI, and others in a workshop at the 2024 AAEA meeting, while laying the foundation for future similar events. This expansion will feature speakers from these institutions, offering direct interactions through panel discussions and Q&A sessions, thereby demystifying their recruitment processes and fostering relationships between AAEA members, job market candidates, and these organizations.
Relevance to AAEA Members/Meeting Attendees: This preconference workshop is expected to provide AAEA members with valuable insights into the hiring practices of these institutions, preparing them for potential career opportunities there. It will also allow these organizations to share their missions and visions, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice in economics and creating a better-prepared global economic workforce.
Intended Audience: AAEA members, Undergraduate students, Graduate students (MS and Ph.D.), and post-doctoral fellows.
