Obituary

Thorald Keith Warley
1930 – 2018

T.K. (Sandy) Warley died peacefully in Guelph on September 10, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anita Inge Gisela Warley (nee Kloetzke); his son Stephan Carl Warley and wife Krista Rahn; his daughter Linda Ann Warley and husband Alan Filewod; his grandchildren Graham Warley and Ian Warley.

Sandy (or Thorald Keith) was born on August 19, 1930 in Great Driffield, East Yorkshire, England. He was the eldest of four children born to Harold and Daisy Warley (nee Marsh). His sisters Marlene Dales and Doreen Land both pre-deceased him; his brother Geoffery survives. After primary school, Sandy attended Bridlington Boy’s School and went on to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Nottingham. It was at the University of

Nottingham where he met his future wife, a recent immigrant from Germany. The two married in 1955. After graduation Sandy became a Lecturer of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nottingham. In 1969 he had the opportunity to take a position as visiting professor at the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph. A year later the family immigrated to Canada and Sandy took up the position as head of the Department of Agricultural Economics. His particular area of expertise was international food trade policy. He was a popular and well-loved teacher, as well as a valued colleague. In his retirement, the university recognized his achievements with an honorary doctorate.

As well as having a distinguished academic career Sandy was an active member of both university and civic organizations, including the University of Guelph Alumni Association, the MS Society, the Guelph Wellington Men’s Club, and the Enabling Garden. He truly lived a life of the mind, reading, debating, and writing until the end. Together with his wife Anita he also made beautiful gardens.

Sandy lived with MS for forty years, and did so with dignity and fortitude. It was an infection that carried him off, but he died without pain and with family close by.

A celebration of Sandy’s life is planned for a future date.
