AAEA News 2020 Selected Presentation Papers & Posters AAEA seeks submissions for Selected Presentations for the 2020 AAEA Annual Meeting in Kansas City, MO. Selected Presentations are a submission category that represents both Selected Papers and Selected Posters. All submissions are reviewed and accepted together, and only after acceptance are the submissions designated as a paper or poster. At the time of submission, individuals will have the option for their submission to be considered as a poster only. There is no paper only option. Abstracts must be received by Wednesday, January 15, 2020 and should be submitted using AAEA’s online Abstract Management System. 2020 Organized Symposia AAEA seeks submissions for Organized Symposia for the 2020 AAEA Annual Meeting in Kansas City, MO. Susan Athey, Stanford University Friday, January 3, 2020 Susan Athey is the Economics of Technology Professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She received her bachelor’s degree from Duke University and her PhD from Stanford, and she holds an honorary doctorate from Duke University. She previously taught at the economics departments at MIT, Stanford and Harvard. Her current research focuses on the economics of digitization, marketplace design, and the intersection of econometrics and machine learning. She has worked on several application areas, including timber auctions, internet search, online advertising, the news media, and the application of digital technology to social impact applications. As one of the first “tech economists,” she served as consulting chief economist for Microsoft Corporation for six years, and now serves on the boards of Expedia, Lending Club, Rover, Turo, and Ripple, as well as non-profit Innovations for Poverty Action. She also serves as a long-term advisor to the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, helping architect and implement their auction-based pricing system. She is the director of the Shared Prosperity and Innovation Initiative at Stanford GSB, and associate director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. Other News Food and Health Economics Workshop The second Food and Health Economics Workshop will take place at the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) June 18 and 19, 2020. The Food and Health Economics Workshop brings together researchers from around the world working in the field of Food and Health Economics. Understanding Food-Related Hardships among Older Americans The University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research (UKCPR), with underwriting from the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, announces a second round competition for research contracts that expand understanding of, and the attendant policy implications for, food-related hardships among older persons in the United States. For purposes of this RFP, older persons are defined as those ages 60 and older. Fall 2020 Issue of the Western Economic Forum Guidelines for Submitting Manuscripts: All submissions to the Western Economics Forum must be submitted electronically in MS Word format. Author and institutional identifications will be removed from MS Word submissions by the editorial team prior to being sent to reviewers. Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged by e-mail. Western Economics Forum (WEF) Topical Focus of Special WEF Issue: Adding Economic Value – Increasing Farm and Community Prosperity in the Western U.S. The Western Economics Forum (WEF) focuses on interdisciplinary issues relevant to the Western United States. Western state economies continue to be impacted by highly variable returns to key commodities; policies that influence the availability of labor, water and other critical inputs; as well as weather patterns that affect the quantity and quality of agricultural production. In response, agricultural producers, researchers, community organizations and educators are seeking strategies to smooth variability in rural incomes, create new sources of employment, reduce use of increasingly scarce inputs to production, and develop markets for new services and products. Philippines Agricultural Economics Circle (UP AEC) With the theme “Breaking Barriers: Building the Future Through Agricultural and Applied Economics,” the University of the Philippines Agricultural Economics Circle (UP AEC) successfully held its event entitled “Agrikonomiya 2019” last September 28. It is a flagship event of the UP AEC which promotes Agricultural and Applied Economics as a field of study to junior and senior high school students and it also encourages the youth to engage in a timely discussion on the agricultural problems in the Philippines.
