AAEA News Upcoming Organized Symposiums
2020 AAEA Awards & Fellows Recognition The AAEA Annual Awards and Fellows Ceremony recognizes professional excellence in agricultural and applied economics. Students, early career professionals, and experienced members are selected on the basis of their achievements in research, teaching and extension activities. It also recognizes AAEA Fellows, AAEA's most prestigious honor. Congratulations to all of the 2020 award winners and Fellows!
View all of the 2020 Award Winners>> 2020 AAEA Mentoring Research Workshop The objective of this workshop is mentor junior faculty (less than 5 years) to transition to agricultural and applied economic departments by providing an orientation to expectations for research, teaching and outreach and develop effective strategies for success. The workshop will focus on constructively criticizing research in progress. Mentoring will include networking, information about the profession, and discussion of current research trends and topic areas. AAEA Trust Call for Proposals The AAEA Trust supports the work of agricultural and applied economists by funding programs, initiatives, activities or other creative endeavors designed to advance the profession. Proposals are chosen to receive funding based on their ability to accomplish at least one of the following goals:
Deadline: October 15, 2020 Call for Applications The AAEA Trust is now accepting applications for the Anthony Grano Scholarship Award. Two scholarships of $1,250 will be awarded to academically successful, highly motivated students in agricultural economics or a closely related discipline with an interest in agricultural policy and the policy formation process. The scholarship will support recipients to travel to Washington, DC to meet with senior staff from USDA, Congressional offices, and agricultural trade associations and commodity organizations. Deadline: October 15, 2020 Uma Lele AERA India/AAEA Mentorship Program The AERA along with one representative from AAEA will play a facilitating role in the selection of Indian students/young professionals to participate in the mentorship program. The offer and themes for each year will be published in one of the issues of Agricultural Economics Research Review (AERR) and recommendation of the Association shall be sent to AAEA for Award of the grant. The following criteria were agreed for screening and recommendation of the candidate(s). Deadline: October 15, 2020 Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowship Call for Applications The Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowship provides an opportunity for early career women scholars working on food, agricultural, or resource issues to collaborate with an established expert at another university, institution, or firm. Deadline: October 15, 2020 Uma Lele Mentor Fellowship Award Call For Applications The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) Trust is now accepting applications for the Uma Lele Mentor Fellowship Award. The Uma Lele Mentor Fellowship Award supports a mentorship relationship with a view to promote high quality research of a policy/problem solving nature in countries with food insecurity and environmental pressures. It is meant to promote collaboration between an early career scholar who is a citizen of and resides in a developing country and a distinguished mentor. Deadline: October 15, 2020 Call for Applications Editorship appointments for the American Journal of Agricultural Economics are staggered such that two new appointments are made every two years. The AAEA Board now seeks a diverse group of applicants for two editors to be appointed for a four-year term, beginning in January 2022. Each editor handles approximately one-fourth of the submitted manuscripts and makes independent editorial decisions on these submissions. The degree to which candidate’s expertise complements that of the continuing editors, Amy Ando and Marc Bellemare, will be considered in the selection process. Obituary Fred Justus Fred Justus, husband of Evelyn W. Justus for almost 68 years and Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics at the University of Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home on July 24, 2020. He was born in St. Louis, MO, on June 30, 1930 to Fred and Emma Justus. People Section
Other News Food Distribution Research Society Annual Conference Deadline extended to August 31, 2020 The Food Distribution Research Society invites submissions of Research Reports, Research Updates, and Outreach Writing for the 2020 Annual Conference. Work related to any food distribution area from the farm gate through retail to the consumer may be submitted. Harvard Fellowship Call Harvard is now accepting applications for the Radcliffe Fellowship for the period of September 2022-May 2022, and to seek your aid in sharing our online application with the members of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. CALL FOR PAPERS In mid-March, all of us in K-12 and higher education had to retool our courses under the intense emergency circumstances of a global pandemic due to COVID-19. As we look ahead to the 2020/21 academic year, we begin to imagine how to successfully adapt courses for online delivery, while continuing to offer learning experiences for our students that are as high quality as possible. Similar challenges are also facing those of us working in extension. Building on the success of the 2020 NSE special issue, the 2021 special issue of “Natural Sciences Education in a COVID-19 World” will explore our collective experiences with adapting to COVID-19. 2020 Scholarship Awards for Richardson-Applebaum Outstanding Graduate Research on Food Distribution The Food Distribution Research Society (FDRS) is pleased to accept applications for the Richardson-Applebaum Outstanding Graduate Research on Food Distribution and Marketing. Broadly defined, this area encompasses all economic functions that occur between the farm gate and final consumer. 2021 Scholarship Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research on Food Distribution and Marketing The Food Distribution Research Society (FDRS) is pleased to accept applications for the 2021 Scholarship Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research on Food Distribution and Marketing. Broadly defined, this area encompasses all economic functions that occur between the farm gate and final consumer. 2020 FDRS Virtual Conference The Food Distribution Research Society annual conference is going virtual! Introducing Q Open Developed in collaboration between Oxford University Press, the European Agricultural and Applied Economics Publications Foundation, and the European Association for Agricultural Economics, Q Open is an innovative new open-access journal, publishing applied research across agricultural, climate, environmental, food, resource, and rural development economics. The title is inspired by the Q category of the Journal of Economic Literature’s subject classification system. Announcing the Online Agricultural and Resource Economics Seminar The seminar is held on Wednesdays at 11 am Central US time.
