The section will serve as a forum for exchanging ideas, disseminating research, and identifying opportunities for collaboration among members and other professionals in academia, industry, government, and scholars in the region. The South Asia Section will also provide a forum for members to learn about professional development and networking opportunities. The section will mentor junior AAEA members with interest in this area. Upcoming Workshop: Using Scanner Data for Food Economics Research—Resources and Approaches for New and Advanced Researchers Dates: August 3-4, 2022 (immediately following the AAEA meetings) AEPP Special Issue Call for Submissions: The editors of AEPP invite authors to submit abstracts for a special issue on COVID-19 in South Asia. Over the last two years aggregate economic growth in many South Asian countries has been badly hit, with COVID-19 exposing structural vulnerabilities and threatening to undo decades of progress in what was the fastest growing region in the world pre-pandemic. The unravelling of these economies has serious implications for rural livelihoods and food and nutrition security, raising key questions on the role of social protection and resilience of agri-food systems. This issue will focus on forward-looking policy-relevant applied work on these themes, outlining the impacts of the pandemic in the region and lessons learnt for similar shocks going forward. Call for Papers Applied Economics Perspectives and Policy - Deadline extended Call for Submissions: Submissions will be accepted for the special issue through Call for Papers Water Economics has been taught for many decades at undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching approaches included the traditional profit/utility-maximizing agents' behavior (farmers, households) where individuals decide the allocation of a given amount of water among consuming activities. Main issues such as availability, allocation, pricing, investment, technology, and management of water resources have been at the forefront of the field of water economics. In recent decades, water resources worldwide have seen many transformations both locally and globally, making the challenges facing water-using agents much more complicated and, as a result, higher skills are needed for the tools and methods they employ. AETR General Call for Papers Applied Economics Teaching Resources (AETR) is putting out a general call for papers for innovations in teaching and Extension education. Over the past two years, higher education has a seen dramatic shifts in teaching and extension, which has resulted in significant innovations in instructional delivery, new methods, new pedagogy and innovations in how we teach and do Extension. AETR seeks manuscript submissions highlighting these innovations and new methods, content, and approaches. Manuscript submissions can include research articles, commentaries, methods and case studies. Please email abstracts of your submission idea to the editor at aetr.editor@gmail.com. The abstract should include a proposed title, up to 500 word abstract for the proposed manuscript, and list of authors. The editor will review abstracts, provide feedback and invite submissions for regular submissions, thematic sections and feature articles on this topic. Call for Nominations Spring 2022 Nomination packets and letters of recommendation (self-nominations only) should be submitted to Valentina Hartarska (Chair, CWAE Awards Subcommittee) by March 21, 2022 at: aaea.cwae@gmail.com. Senders will be notified of receipt. Other News Call for Applications: Promoting the Purchase to Plate Tools for Food Demand and Diet Quality Research The Gifford Center for Population Students at UC Davis, in collaboration with the Economic Research Service of the USDA seeks to promote the use of the Purchase to Plate tools developed by USDA. To this end, the Gifford Center invites research proposals that use Purchase to Plate tools to conduct research on diet quality, food choices, the cost of a healthy diet, nutritional food insecurity, economic and racial/ethnic disparities in diets, and effects of policy on these outcomes, among other themes. Proposals may address multiple research areas. The goal of this program is to fund proposals focused on these core research areas that display sound research design and high potential impact. Thanks to generous funding from USDA-ERS, the Gifford Center anticipates funding up to five proposals, up to a maximum of $75,000 per award. To learn more about this funding opportunity please visit: https://gifford.ucdavis.edu/usda-pp-grants/ NAREA’s 18th Annual Workshop NAREA’s 2022 Workshop Committee from the University of Connecticut seeks creative, scholarly analysis and contributions for our June 14-15, 2022 (postponed from 2020) workshop following the NAREA’s annual meeting in Mystic, CT. Senior, early-career, and creative scholars are sought, and student attendance is also encouraged. This workshop welcomes scholars from any background; we seek diverse perspectives. Initial deadline is February 22, 2022 (see below). To incentivize high-quality contributions, we offer an honorarium (below) for selected speakers. In addition, we will have a finite budget to subsidize travel for early career faculty or graduate students to attend; we will announce guidelines to apply after we have finalized the program toward end of spring semester; we will encourage attendance from HBCUs, 1890 and 1994 Land Grant University faculty and students as well. DEI Survey Researchers from Arizona State University, in partnership with The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association Task Force for Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite you to take part in an online survey regarding your attitudes towards and experiences with diversity and inclusion in agricultural and applied economics. To access the study please click on the link below. The study is open until February 28, 2022. The Interagency Council on Statistical Policy's Recommendation for a Standard Application Process (SAP) for Requesting Access to Certain Confidential Data Assets As many of our AAEA colleagues may know, the federal government is currently developing a standard application process (SAP) that will make it much easier to apply for access to vitally important restricted-use data sets. The SAP will provide a single online portal for applying for access to confidential data from 16 federal statistical agencies and units and a searchable inventory of metadata for confidential federal data assets. The Office of Management and Budget is currently asking for feedback from the public on a preliminary plan for implementing the SAP (Federal Register Notice). OMB is particularly interested in feedback on key elements of the plan, including:
We recognize the value of your input on this important new effort. Experts like you have a unique understanding of the challenges involved in providing broad access to confidential data. Act now to ensure your voice is heard on this important federal initiative. Comments must be provided in writing no later than March 16, 2022. For more information on how to review the proposal and submit comments, click here. INTERNATIONAL CONSORTIUM ON APPLIED BIOECONOMY RESEARCH July 5 to 8, Bologna, Italy Innovation is fundamental for ensuring societies are able to produce more, while requiring fewer inputs. Without innovation-driven productivity gains, the problems outlined by Malthus over 200 years ago would be more pronounced in modern societies. Innovations along supply chains are essential to meeting the needs of increasing populations, while simultaneously striving to ensure production is as sustainable as possible. Use AgEcon Search to find COVID-research AgEcon Search, https://ageconsearch.umn.edu/, the repository with over 160,000 full text working papers, conference papers, journal articles, and other materials, includes almost 300 papers on various aspects of the COVID pandemic. Topics include the impact on child nutrition programs and guest farm workers, transportation challenges, and the effects on trade. Julie Kelly, who co-managed AgEcon Search for over 20 years, retired in November of 2021. Besides her leadership in AgEcon Search and the global community it supports, Julie was a leader and mentor in the University of Minnesota Libraries, as detailed in this article https://www.continuum.umn.edu/2022/01/mentor-and-more/. AgEcon Search hosts 16,800 AAEA conference papers and articles that were downloaded over 1.8 million times in 2021 alone. |
