Waldo E. Grimes

Agricultural economics departments in the land grant university system owe much of their current state to Dr. Grimes, who began his work at Kansas State University in 1913 after earning his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Wisconsin. He was appointed superintendent of the Kansas State agronomy farm in 1913 and joined the Department of Agricultural Economics in 1915. He was named head of that department in 1921. In 1936 he was named head of the Department of Economics and Sociology, which combined related departments in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Agriculture and continued as head until his death in 1947. Dr. Grimes also served as acting dean of the Division of Agriculture and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1934-35. He served on the executive committee of the American Farm Economic Association and was vice president in 1934 and president in 1935 of that organization.
